Conception of Type

Can type design be subjective to its own content? A temporary exhibition is created with the attention on type design. Type design can be created for the purpose of an exhibition, but almost never the focal point of an event. This typeface is trying to reject usability on a large scale, contrary to what many type designers do. Through mapping and using the fundamentals of type design, a new template for potential shapes is created. There has been sought after a momentary feeling, as letters are searching for tension and form. As for the type specimen, it is attempting to present an alternative publication by combining the digital platform with the good old printed matter, rather than instructing the use. During the graduation week some galleries and foundations awarded best works, this project got an honorable mention by the art gallery Stroom Den Haag.

KISS and RIOT

During the KABK graduation festival, a campaign has been designed to introduce and show the graduation of the graphic design department. For this purpose I was asked to make a typeface for the exhibition. This typeface is a reversed contrast duospace grotesque. Besides the typeface, together with Christina Yarashevich Lisa Moret and Zineb Benasserou, I have also been working on the campaign's printed matters: posters, booklet etc.

Theses Index Page

This webpage collects all theses written by the 4th year students of the graphic design department 2016. By filtering each student's thesis through a selection of 5 to 10 keywords, we extracted one sentence per student that was afterwards recombined into a new general text. This project has been made in collaboration with Martijn de Heer and Rafael Henneberke, fellow students during my studies.
Website still under construction.

Visual Language

Is a project exploring the boundaries where type can become an image and a non-verbal language. This project finds its roots in the time where analogue tools were used to communicate over long distances.

Letters are Signs
for Sounds

This reader is a research into old typefaces that have been hidden in the shadows of a change in time. These typefaces have been made between 1888 and 1905 and selected by me on their somehow peculiar characteristics. This selection constitutes the first part of the publication. In the second part, I have been drawing new letters inspired by the shapes and details of these old outcast typefaces. As a complement to the publication, a poster is gathering extracts from Eric Gill's "An Essay on Typography", a writing highly inspirational for me as it reflects in my oppinion still valuable ways of thinking about type design in our time.

INSIDE Magazine No.7

This new issue of INSIDE magazine is composed of two separate publications. The first one gathers student's essays as well as descriptions of their years projects. The second one displays the graduates works. In collaboration with Nina Couvert, we proposed a new format to the team, where an A4 format encloses the stapled graduates' insert.

DHS Poster

"You might be a domestic terrorist if..." In 2011, the Domestic Homeland Security (DHS) in the USA has released a list of hit-words used to survey the social media. This poster explains the seriousness of their hit-words and yet how silly it actually sounds like when compared to physical surveillance.

Colorhalftone

This project is a research into the translation of the colorhalftone in both 2D and 3D outcomes. The animation of the colorhalftone revealed the presence of the moiré effect (a superposition of dots creating a visual illusion) in its construction. In 3D, this illusion was embodied by an hexagonal shape: the illusion of a 3D cube. By using the programming language ‘Canvas' and a 3D printer three shapes came eventually out of this exploration.

"Comatose" Internet Factory

What does ‘data pollution' mean to you? The concept of ‘data pollution' implies an understanding of what is causing pollution as well as what is actually considered as pollution. Initiated by an article extracted from The New York Times entitled "Power, Pollution and the Internet", this investigation is visualizing the effects of our use on the internet and the physical pollution it actually respresents.

Kazem

Together with Maxime Matias who was exchange student from ENSAD, Paris, we explored the possible ways of creating type with an Arduino. We constructed an arm with two pivot points, allowing each one of us to control a different part of the arm while writing the alphabet. We continued the spirit of the Arduino made font by extending it to a workable typeface. The name of the type is dedicated to our workshop tutor, Max Kazemzadeh.

INSIDE Magazine No.4-5

"SHOPPING/OFF SHOPPING presents the Graduation Projects of INSIDE’s 2nd. Class of Graduates, and interviews held by first and second year Master Students on the theme of Off Shopping, ... 'defined as possible alternatives for the usual typology of shops: a housing block in Beijing (China) where shopkeepers sell art supplies to students of the nearby art academy and disguised family houses in Krakow (Poland) hidden in secret passages where people can buy vintage products and have a beer or a glass of wine'." In collaboration with Nina Couvert we set out to combine two issues into one magazine with a clear distinction between the two booklets.

Throw a Stone

Throwing a stone can be either a very harmless move made out of boredom or, on the contrary, a political gesture, expression of a disagreement. This installation puts these two situations across each other by using found footage. The installation has been inspired from the song “Comatose Luck” of Xploding Plastics, whose lyrics come from a movie called The Petrified Forest.

About

My work is driven from an interest in type design and typography, with a main focus on campaigns, books, identities and self initiated typefaces. In my previous study at the Media College I built experience on the development of concepts, campaigns and identities for commercial purposes. During my four years at KABK the passion for typography and type design became evident, where self initiated projects lead to finding ways of using type design as a strong and independent storyteller.

I am currently looking for job opportunities in Amsterdam and keep a high interest for collaborations, discussions and freelance work.
